Somali Police Chief’s Bodyguard Dies Seconds After Stepping Off Plane in Dhusamareb

What was supposed to be a routine arrival mission for senior security officials in Somalia ended in tragedy after a police officer attached to Mogadishu Police Chief Ma'alin Mahdi lost his life moments after landing at Dhusamareb Airport.

The officer, identified as Mukhtar Qasim Samay, was part of the security team accompanying Mahdi to Dhusamareb ahead of the inauguration of Galmudug's incoming leader, Liban Ahmed Hassan.

According to reports from Somali media, the accident happened shortly after the team disembarked from the aircraft.

Witness accounts indicate that Samay had descended from the plane and was walking away when he was struck by the aircraft's rotating propeller.

Video footage circulating online has since drawn widespread attention across Somalia, showing the final moments before the fatal incident occurred.

The tragedy has also raised fresh concerns about safety procedures at regional airports, especially during high-profile government visits where security teams and officials often move quickly upon arrival.

In Dhusamareb, residents preparing for the inauguration ceremony were shocked by the news, with many describing the incident as a heartbreaking accident that overshadowed preparations for the political event.

The officer was among personnel tasked with ensuring the safety of senior officials attending the ceremony, making the loss even more painful for colleagues within the Somali Police Force.

Tributes quickly poured in after news of his death emerged.

Mahdi Omar Mumin, in a public message, described Samay as one of the heroes of the Somali Police Force, particularly within the renowned Haramacad unit.

Friends, fellow officers and members of the public also expressed condolences to the family as they mourn the sudden loss.

The incident has shifted attention away from the Galmudug inauguration and placed focus on airport operational safety, with many Somalis questioning whether more safeguards are needed to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

For now, Dhusamareb remains in mourning as colleagues remember an officer who arrived for duty but never made it beyond the airport grounds.

Milk, Not Manifestos: Why Senator Tabitha Karanja Says She Quit UDA

When politicians change parties, the explanation is usually about principle, loyalty or the party's direction. Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja has given a far more everyday reason for leaving President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) for Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP): the lack of milk on the market. Karanja named the milk situation as one of the reasons behind her decision. It is an unusually specific grievance for a defection announcement, and it puts a household product at the center of a political story that is normally told through power struggles and alliances. Her move comes hours after Gathoni Wamuchomba announced she was leaving UDA to defend her position on another ticket. Both exits point to the Mt Kenya region, where UDA has been losing members to the DCP ahead of next year's general election. What remains unclear is how much the milk complaint weighs against the other factors that typically drive such moves, and whe...
