A year after Raila Odinga's death, ODM is using the occasion to say what it intends to do next. At the Raila Odinga Memorial event in Kakamega on Friday, October 9, party chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga relayed a message from party leader Dr. Oburu Odinga that put the party's priority in plain terms: "hatuwezi kuwa bila power."
The gathering was one of several held under ODM's Mwezi wa Baba programme, which marks the first anniversary of Raila's death in October 2025. The programme builds toward a national service at Kang'o ka Jaramogi in Bondo on October 15. Kakamega, then, is a stop on a longer journey that moves from remembrance toward the party's plans for the 2027 General Election.
Wanga tied that ambition to the party's own conduct, promising free, fair and transparent nominations. The pledge, together with Oburu's line, reads as an effort to reassure members that ODM can hold together and stay relevant nationally without its long-serving leader.
Her other remarks sat inside the same frame. By recalling that Uhuru Kenyatta once said he would hand the presidency to Raila, and that it never happened, she argued that ODM has been burned by outside promises before. It is a case for the party relying on itself, though the story notes her assessment was offered without supporting evidence.
