President William Ruto hosted South Sudanese Head of State Salva Kiir Mayardit at State House, Nairobi, on Monday, October 5, in a visit centred on bilateral relations and South Sudan's upcoming elections.
Ruto said the two leaders discussed relations between Kenya and South Sudan and explored trade and investment opportunities, alongside extensive talks on South Sudan's General Elections scheduled for December 2026.
"We expressed satisfaction with the strong relations between our two nations and resolved to continue opening more opportunities for trade and investment for our citizens," Ruto wrote. "Commended South Sudan for the General Election to be held in December 2026. Kenya stands ready to support South Sudan in this endeavour while encouraging dialogue and consensus among all parties."
Ruto also thanked Kiir for his support during the groundbreaking of the Dangote East Africa Refinery in Lamu.
Ahead of the visit, South Sudanese Presidential Press Secretary Ambassador Arek Ajou Deng said Kiir would hold high-level bilateral meetings with Ruto aimed at consolidating broader regional and continental support for South Sudan's elections. "Those meetings are aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries. The discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations, South Sudan's electoral preparations and the measures required to ensure peaceful, credible and successful elections," Deng said. She added that the leaders would also discuss economic and infrastructural cooperation, including the Lamu refinery and the respective roles Kenya and South Sudan will play in supporting it.
Kiir's visit marks his first trip outside South Sudan since the dissolution of the Transitional Government of National Unity. He was received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, and was accompanied by officials from South Sudan's embassy in Kenya, led by Ambassador Simon Juach Deng.
