For Cabinet Secretaries and senior officials eyeing seats in the 2027 General Election, the waiting game has an end date. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has set February 9, 2027 as the deadline for public officers seeking elective positions to resign, six months ahead of the August 10 election.
The requirement is not new. It follows a 2022 Court of Appeal decision affirming that State and public officers seeking elective positions must leave office at least six months before the general election. That means the officials who have been attending church fundraisers, meeting supporters and launching empowerment programmes, as People Daily reports, have roughly four months to turn testing the waters into a decision.
The list of those watching the date is long. Cabinet Secretaries whose names have featured in the succession race include Soipan Tuya, William Kabogo, Alice Wahome, Alfred Mutua and Lee Kinyanjui, along with Wyckliffe Oparanya, Rebecca Miano and Hassan Joho, who is also linked to the race for Deputy President. State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito and KRA board chairperson Nderitu Muriithi are named too, as are Principal Secretaries Julius Bitok, Beatrice Inyangala and Terry Mbaika.
Until the deadline, the activities are informal: gauging support before officially declaring. After it, each name either leaves government or drops out of the race. The affected leaders are expected to make their final decisions by February next year.
