The killing was only the first emergency in Nyamira South that day. The second began once police arrived at the house where John Kebaso Kaptai, 50, had died.
According to the story, a crowd gathered outside and allegedly confronted the officers. Some members reportedly threw stones and demanded the suspect be handed over for mob justice. Police responded by firing shots into the air to disperse the crowd and protect her. The police report says five officers discharged their firearms, firing a combined 20 rounds. No injuries were reported.
The 18-year-old woman was then taken to a police station and booked on suspicion of murder. She remains in custody while detectives record statements and gather evidence. The story says police believe the couple had been drinking before they got home, where an argument began over issues not yet established, and that the fatal stabbing followed. Kaptai's body is at Nyamira County Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
Several things remain unclear. The story does not say how large the crowd was, who led it, whether anyone has been arrested over the stone-throwing, or whether police will review the use of firearms. Booking on suspicion is not a charge, and nothing has been tested in court.
