Whoever Ruto takes as his 2027 running mate, he will disappoint someone. The story shows the pressure building from three directions at once.
Supporters of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki have been pushing for him to keep the job. ODM, meanwhile, has reportedly sought representation in any coalition deal with Ruto's UDA. Analyst Odhiambo Otieno has now added a third name, saying on the Political Headache podcast that Kalonzo Musyoka could fit the role if he agreed to work with Ruto's broad-based government.
That last scenario is the hardest to square with the record. The story notes that Ruto has previously criticised Kalonzo's long years in government, and that the Wiper leader is part of the United Opposition alongside Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang'i, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa and Edwin Sifuna. Kalonzo has also said he still intends to run for president in 2027. He was Raila Odinga's running mate in 2013 and 2017 and backed his bid again in 2022.
The story is clear on where this stands. No official announcement says Kalonzo plans to join Ruto's camp or become his running mate. Otieno's idea is speculation. It does show how crowded the question is, and how any answer would ripple through both camps' negotiations.
