Murder-accused John Matara has now taken the witness stand in the High Court, moving the trial into the phase where the defence gets to tell its side. Testifying in his own defence, he gave his account of the events leading up to the death of Scarlett Wahu, sister of Pastor Kanyari, who was found dead in an apartment in Nairobi's South B area on January 3, 2024.
Matara has denied the murder charge from the start, and his testimony is the clearest statement yet of how he intends to contest it. He addressed their encounter and the circumstances surrounding their relationship, presenting his version as evidence meant to counter the accusation against him.
Prosecutors, for their part, are seeking to establish his responsibility for Wahu's death. The court is expected to weigh the evidence from both sides before reaching a decision, which means Matara's account will be tested against everything the prosecution has put forward.
Wahu's death drew wide public attention because of where and how her body was discovered, and interest in the case has continued as witness accounts and court proceedings reveal more details.
