Man Killed as Police, Residents Clash Over Mining Arrests at Lolgorian Police Station

Police have confirmed the death of a man shot during violent clashes between officers and residents who allegedly tried to storm Lolgorian Police Station in Trans Mara South, Narok County.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon after residents staged protests following the arrest of several people suspected of involvement in illegal mining activities in the area. According to police reports, tension escalated when a large crowd marched to the police station demanding the immediate release of those arrested.

Officers manning the station attempted to calm the crowd, but the situation quickly turned chaotic. Police said at least six officers were injured after being attacked by protesters armed with stones and other crude weapons. The injured officers were treated at Lolgorian Sub-County Hospital, with some reportedly in stable condition.

In the process of repelling the crowd and preventing access to the station's armoury, police opened fire, fatally shooting one person. The deceased's body was moved to Lolgorian Sub-County Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem and identification.

Confirming the incident, police said investigations have been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting and to identify those who instigated the violence.

Residents who spoke after the incident called on the national government to urgently address the long-standing mining dispute in Lolgorian, pointing to ongoing conflicts between local miners, investors, and security agencies over mining rights. They urged the Ministry of Mining and the Ministry of Interior to hold dialogue with the community to find a lasting solution and prevent further loss of life.
