Maurice Ogeta spent years preparing for violence aimed at Raila Odinga. The moment he says he was least able to stop was not an attack at all.
Raila died in India on October 15, 2025. Ogeta, his longtime bodyguard, says he was walking about a metre behind him when the former prime minister, who had been walking slowly, suddenly stopped and appeared unwell. Knowing Raila had previously had problems with his back and leg, Ogeta asked whether either was hurting. Raila did not respond. His condition seemed to worsen, Ogeta said, as he looked upwards and became unresponsive.
Ogeta said he tried to guide Raila to a nearby chair, but the politician's weight suddenly fell against him. He called for a nurse, and an ambulance was summoned to take Raila to hospital, where he died shortly after arriving.
The account sits alongside Ogeta's recollections of the 2023 protests, where he and other officers shielded Raila from gunfire. Pulse Kenya, the story's listed source, frames the two as very different pains: the desperate effort to save him then, and the helplessness of watching him collapse.
