Anderson Kalu started in the 1980s as a news writer at the Voice of Kenya, the broadcaster that later became the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation. By 1989 he was a Senior Information Officer and Kiswahili news anchor at KBC, a job he held until April 1993. The story says his distinctive voice made him familiar to audiences who followed radio and television in the 1980s and 1990s.
In June 1995 he moved to South Africa and joined the SABC. He spent the next three decades there as a Principal Announcer and Producer with the Radio External Service, producing and presenting news programmes in both English and Kiswahili. That means a Kenyan voice was carrying news in Kiswahili from Johannesburg for most of his working life.
The Media Council of Kenya said in a statement issued on Monday that he made a significant contribution to broadcasting in Kenya and beyond as a news writer, anchor, announcer and producer. It also described him as a generous mentor who welcomed others into the newsroom and nurtured their passion for journalism, adding that his passing is a profound loss to the media fraternity in Kenya and beyond.
The story does not say when he died, his age, or where he died. It also does not include tributes from KBC, SABC or colleagues who worked with him.
