De la Fuente Says Yamal Is "En Route to Legend Status" as Spain Beat Czechia, Warns of Croatia Backlash

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente declared that Lamine Yamal is on his way to earning "legend status" after the teenage winger scored in a 3-1 win over Czechia, while also warning that upcoming opponents Croatia will arrive with "stung pride" following a heavy 7-0 defeat to England.

Yamal opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a curling strike, before further goals from Rodri and Mikel Merino secured the win for Spain in Oviedo. It marked the third consecutive international appearance in which the 19-year-old has scored an early opening goal, and Spain remain top of Group 3 with nine points.

Speaking to reporters afterward, De la Fuente expressed admiration for Yamal's rapid development, saying the winger embodies Spain's aggressive, high-energy tactical identity and consistently finds ways to break down opposition defences. He added that Yamal's maturity on the pitch helps set the tone for the rest of the squad.

"He never stops surprising us. He's got so much talent, so many possibilities, he never stops growing with giant steps," De la Fuente said. "Lamine's en route to earning the status of 'Legend'. He's scored early in our last three games, and his early goals demonstrate the attitude of the whole team. We always try to establish our identity in every match right from the start."

Looking ahead, De la Fuente addressed England's extraordinary 7-0 win over Croatia in Rijeka, warning his players to expect a fierce response from a wounded Croatian side rather than a weakened one. "It's really strange, certainly not normal, that in the other group game Croatia have let in seven goals even against a powerful opponent like England," he said. "That means that when we arrive out there, they'll be suffering from stung pride and have an excess of motivation."

Spain travel to face Croatia on October 6, aiming to protect their three-point lead over second-placed England at the top of Group 3 and extend their 41-match unbeaten run. Czechia remain bottom of the group without a point.
