County Enforcement Officer Killed, Three Injured as Gang Attacks Likoni Checkpoint and Seizes Police Rifle

A Mombasa County enforcement officer, Omari Mzerera, has died after armed attackers raided a cess collection checkpoint in Likoni, wounding three other officers in a pre-dawn attack.

The attack happened at about 3.40am on Monday, October 26, along Barabara ya Mchanga, where county enforcement officers and two administration police officers were stationed.

Police said the gang confronted the officers and a violent scuffle followed. During it, the attackers reportedly grabbed an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds from one of the police officers and used it on the officers.

Mombasa County Police Commander Stella Cherono confirmed the incident. She said one county enforcement officer was killed and three others were injured and rushed to hospital. According to eyewitnesses, the officers tried to fight back, and police fired several shots into the air to scatter the gang, but the attackers overpowered them.

One administration police officer suffered deep cuts to his hand and a gunshot wound to his left thigh. Another county enforcement officer had deep cuts to his head and right thigh. A fourth enforcement officer reportedly fled the scene unharmed. The three wounded officers were taken to Diani Beach Hospital, while Mzerera's body was moved to the Coast General mortuary after a doctor pronounced him dead.

Cherono said early indications suggest about five suspects were involved, though police are still working to establish their exact number and identities. Scene of crime officers collected evidence at the checkpoint, and a manhunt is under way. Recovering the stolen rifle and its ammunition is a top priority for detectives.

No arrests had been reported at the time of publication. The attack has renewed concern about security in Likoni, though authorities have not linked it to terrorism. Police have asked anyone with information to come forward.

ODM Politician Warns Ruto: These Individuals Are Unfit for Appointment

He further emphasized that President Ruto should avoid appointing anyone who has already served as governor for two terms, suggesting that this group should be completely excluded from consideration. Alai's argument seems to stem from a desire for a change in leadership and the introduction of new ideas into the government system. He is advocating for action to be taken, indicating that reappointing former governors who have had a substantial impact on their respective counties could impede the progress and transformation necessary for national development.
