66-Year-Old Man Dies After Confrontation With Son in Mowlem; Son Arrested

A family confrontation in Mowlem, Nairobi East, has ended in tragedy after a 66-year-old man died following an alleged altercation with his son.

Police have arrested the deceased's 28-year-old son as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding his father's death. The deceased, identified as James Hunja Macharia, reportedly died after sustaining serious head injuries during an incident at the family home on Friday, October 2, 2026.

The case came to police attention after the deceased's brother reported the death, raising concerns that Hunja may have been assaulted before he died. Officers visited Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary and examined the body, establishing that he had sustained several injuries to his head, injuries now considered potentially significant in determining the circumstances of his death.

Investigators then turned to the family home in Mowlem, where they established that Hunja had been involved in a confrontation with his son earlier that day. According to the preliminary police account, the confrontation escalated, and the son allegedly pushed his father, causing him to fall and sustain a serious head injury.

In his account to investigators, the son reportedly said his father regained consciousness after the incident but later complained of a headache, prompting family members' concern. He was subsequently taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

What initially appeared to be a family disagreement has become a homicide investigation, as detectives work to establish whether the injuries sustained during the confrontation directly caused his death. Police continue gathering evidence from the scene and are expected to rely on medical findings, witness statements, and the circumstances of the confrontation to determine next steps.

Hunja's body remains preserved at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary as investigations continue. The 28-year-old suspect remains in police custody pending further investigation and expected arraignment. Authorities have not indicated any conviction, and the allegations against him will need to be tested through the legal process. A postmortem is expected to provide further clarity on the exact cause of death and the extent of his injuries.
