Nairobi Woman, 26, Arrested After Allegedly Attempting to Smuggle Bhang Into Buruburu Police Station

A 26-year-old Nairobi woman has been arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle bhang and a matchbox into Buruburu Police Station, concealed inside a loaf of bread.

According to police, Bernice Achieng had visited her boyfriend, who was being held at the station, and asked officers at the report office to pass the bread along to him. The package reportedly drew the attention of officers, who opted to inspect it before allowing it into the cells.

During the search, officers allegedly discovered five rolls of suspected bhang and a matchbox hidden inside the bread. The find prompted a further search of Achieng and her belongings, which reportedly turned up an additional seven rolls of bhang concealed in a jacket pocket — bringing the total recovered to 12 rolls of suspected bhang.

The items were secured as exhibits, and Achieng remained in custody pending further action. She is expected to be arraigned in court, where the allegations against her will be addressed through the legal process.

The incident highlights the security screening police stations use to check items brought in for detainees, with food and personal belongings routinely inspected to prevent prohibited substances or materials from reaching suspects in custody.

Authorities have not indicated whether the boyfriend in custody was aware of the alleged attempt to bring the substances into the station. Investigators are expected to examine the broader circumstances surrounding the suspected drugs, including where they were obtained and their intended use, as part of the ongoing probe.
