Kenyan Newspapers Review: Sifuna Holds Talks with Matiang'i and Orengo as Oburu Travels to UK

Kenyan newspapers on Friday, September 11, focused on ODM leader Oburu Oginga's medical trip to the United Kingdom and behind-the-scenes talks among opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Star reported that Oburu flew to the UK for a comprehensive medical examination and rest on advice from his personal doctors and party leadership. The 82-year-old Siaya senator said the trip followed a short stay and discharge from Nairobi Hospital and involved routine checks associated with ageing. He reassured members that ODM has strong internal structures to manage operations while he is away, with deputy party leaders including Kisii Governor Simba Arati in charge.

The Standard highlighted conditions inside the Burundian Embassy in Nairobi where migrants are sheltering after President William Ruto's crackdown on foreigners running small businesses. The publication described muddy and slippery grounds with belongings scattered, limited humanitarian aid and poor hygiene, with one woman saying they were spending nights in the cold.

The Daily Nation focused on Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna who on Thursday, September 10, held talks with Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang'i and Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The paper said Sifuna, Matiang'i and Siaya Governor James Orengo discussed forming an alliance bringing together Gusii, Luo and Luhya communities to strengthen bargaining power within the opposition, which is under pressure to settle on a single presidential candidate.

People Daily reported that at least 20 MPs from Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia and Trans Nzoia met in Kisumu convened by Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya and presented demands to President Ruto as a condition for endorsing his 2027 reelection, with the deputy president position top of the list, highlighting fissures within the broad-based government.

Taifa Leo reported that the IEBC's procurement regulations are under court review after Oilmax Ventures Ltd filed a High Court case challenging standards for printing 2027 ballot papers following dismissal of its complaint by the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board, with the court suspending the procurement process pending determination.

ODM Politician Warns Ruto: These Individuals Are Unfit for Appointment

R obert Alai has recently expressed his views on the matter of former governors being appointed by President William Ruto. According to Alai, governors who have served more than two terms should not be considered for any appointments. He further emphasized that President Ruto should avoid appointing anyone who has already served as governor for two terms, suggesting that this group should be completely excluded from consideration. This stance has sparked a significant amount of discussion among Kenyans on various social media platforms, with many individuals sharing their perspectives on the issue. Alai's argument seems to stem from a desire for a change in leadership and the introduction of new ideas into the government system. He is advocating for action to be taken, indicating that reappointing former governors who have had a substantial impact on their respective counties could impede the progress and transformation necessary for national development. This perspective reflects...
