Inside a Suspected Police Hit Squad: What the Mbobu and Mutiso Murders Reveal

A year-long murder investigation has taken a troubling turn, with detectives now alleging that two separate, high-profile killings in Nairobi — lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu and Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso — may be connected through a network involving serving police officers.

The breakthrough came with the arrest of Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, suspected of being the gunman behind Mbobu's killing on September 9, 2025, along Magadi Road. Detectives recovered the Ceska pistol issued to him, and ballistic testing has since confirmed it was the weapon used in the shooting.

But what makes this case bigger than a single arrest is who investigators believe was behind it. According to the DCI, Inspector Kenneth Sang — still at large — allegedly coordinated the operation, working with Rose Mbithe, a suspect already in custody over the separate killing of Dr. Mutiso in Upper Hill on July 29, 2026.

That overlap has pushed the investigation beyond a single case, raising a harder question for the DCI: whether officers meant to enforce the law were instead being used to carry out targeted killings for hire. The agency has said it is actively pursuing Sang and looking into whether additional suspects — inside or outside the police service — played a role in either murder.

Specialised homicide detectives worked with forensic experts over the past year to build the case, ultimately linking physical evidence, ballistics, and the two suspects' alleged coordination. The DCI has pledged that anyone involved will be pursued and prosecuted "regardless of rank or affiliation" — language that signals the investigation isn't stopping with Cheruiyot's arrest.

Cheruiyot remains in custody awaiting arraignment, while the search continues for Sang and anyone else connected to what detectives now describe as a coordinated pattern of killings.

ODM Politician Warns Ruto: These Individuals Are Unfit for Appointment

He further emphasized that President Ruto should avoid appointing anyone who has already served as governor for two terms, suggesting that this group should be completely excluded from consideration. Alai's argument seems to stem from a desire for a change in leadership and the introduction of new ideas into the government system.
