DCI Uncovers Alleged Plot to Poison Witnesses in Dr Mutiso Murder Case, Prosecution Opposes Bail

Homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations say they have uncovered a plot by suspects in the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso to silence police informers and cooperating witnesses using poisoned food.

In an affidavit filed before the High Court opposing bail, prosecutors said an associate linked to primary suspects Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her two children was intercepted at Pangani Police Station. The individual, identified as Kimutai, was allegedly apprehended while attempting to deliver food laced with toxic substances to a cooperating suspect in custody.

According to state prosecutors, forensic analysis of the seized food, along with digital data extracted from the associate's phone, revealed alleged coordinated plans to eliminate key informants, frustrate the investigation, and tamper with evidence. The court heard that the network allegedly sought to target individuals who had provided leads helping trace fleeing accomplices across regional borders.

Prosecutors urged the court to deny bail to Mbithe, her son Chris Mulwa, her daughter Angela Mulwa, and their co-accused, arguing their release would pose a serious danger to witnesses. Detectives highlighted that Dr Mutiso's husband, a key state witness, remains especially vulnerable given his prior family ties to those involved and the trauma of the case.

The affidavit argued that keeping the suspects in custody is essential to protecting witnesses and preventing senior rogue officers allegedly named in the conspiracy from undermining the judicial process.

The development underscores the serious risks surrounding this high-profile homicide investigation, as law enforcement works to protect witnesses and preserve the integrity of the case.
