Community in Mourning After Malatani Businesswoman's Death Sparks Renewed Calls for Mental Health Support

Malatani village in Mbooni East, Makueni County, is mourning the death of a 55-year-old businesswoman, identified as Penina, whose death is being treated as a suspected suicide.

Family members discovered her early in the morning after she failed to wake up. Police who responded to the scene confirmed that no note was found, and the circumstances behind what happened remain unclear. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities speaking to family members and others who may offer insight into her final days.

Penina was known locally as a hardworking businesswoman who interacted warmly with the community. Family and neighbours said they had not noticed any signs of distress in the days before her death, leaving many in disbelief.

In response, the area chief raised concern over a rising number of suicide cases in the region, urging residents to seek professional counselling and to lean on trusted friends or family rather than carrying burdens alone.

Police continue to investigate, with the family hoping for answers that may bring some measure of closure.
